Manchester Signal privacy notice

Last updated: 27 October 2026

Who we are

Manchester Signal is a free weekly email newsletter published by Terradeed Ltd, trading as Terradeed Labs ("we", "us"). We are the data controller for the personal data described in this notice.

  • Company number: 16941632
  • Registered office: 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2H 9JQ, United Kingdom
  • Contact: hello@manchestersignal.co.uk

What we collect

  • Your email address, and your first name if you choose to give it.
  • Signup details: the date and time you signed up and confirmed, the form you used, and the wording you agreed to. We keep this as a record of your consent.
  • Delivery data: whether an email was delivered, bounced or marked as spam, and whether you unsubscribed.
  • Opens and link clicks: Kit, our email provider, records that you opened an email and roughly when, and which links you clicked and roughly when, using a tiny image and tracked links in each email. Kit may also receive technical details such as your IP address and device type. The confirmation email we send when you sign up may also be tracked.
  • No extra link tags: we do not add your subscriber ID, your email address or analytics tags to links.
  • Anything you send us, for example if you reply to an issue or email us a correction.

We do not buy, rent or scrape email lists. We only email people who signed up and confirmed their address themselves.

What you agree to when you sign up

This is the exact wording shown under our signup form:

Why we use it and our lawful basis

  • Sending you the newsletter. Lawful basis: consent (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(a)). Under PECR we only send marketing emails with your consent.
  • Keeping a record of your consent and honouring unsubscribes. Lawful basis: legal obligation and legitimate interests (being able to show you consented, and making sure we do not email you after you leave).
  • Recording opens and link clicks, to see what readers find useful. Lawful basis: consent (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(a)), given when you sign up. Under PECR the tracking image and tracked links need your consent, and the signup wording above asks for it.
  • Replying to messages you send us. Lawful basis: legitimate interests (answering you).

You can withdraw consent at any time by clicking unsubscribe in any email, or by emailing hello@manchestersignal.co.uk. Withdrawing does not affect anything we did before. Unsubscribing is how you withdraw consent to open and click tracking: once you unsubscribe, we stop emailing you and no new opens or clicks are recorded. Turning off automatic image loading in your email app stops most open tracking.

Who we share it with

  • Kit (kit.com), our email provider, which stores the list, sends the newsletter and records opens and link clicks on our behalf as a data processor. Kit is based in the United States. We transfer your details to Kit under the UK International Data Transfer Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, which forms part of Kit's data processing agreement (kit.com/dpa, checked 23 Oct 2026).
  • Our website host, GitHub Pages (GitHub, Inc.), may log technical data such as IP addresses when you visit manchestersignal.co.uk.
  • Sponsors never receive your personal data. If a sponsor appears in an issue, we only share combined figures, such as the total number of subscribers.
  • We may disclose data if the law requires it.

We do not sell your data.

How long we keep it

  • While you are subscribed, we keep your details.
  • When you unsubscribe, Kit stops all emails to you straight away. Your record stays in our Kit account marked as unsubscribed, so we have proof of your original consent and can make sure you are not emailed again. We delete unsubscribed records after 24 months. If you would like your details deleted sooner, email hello@manchestersignal.co.uk and we will have them deleted, including from Kit's backups, within one month.
  • Checking you still want it: if you have not clicked a link or replied to us for 12 months, we will email you once to ask whether you want to stay subscribed, and we will remove you if you do not confirm.
  • Kit's own records: Kit says it keeps email statistics, such as sends, bounces and unsubscribes, for 5 years on a rolling basis, after which they are archived rather than deleted (Kit: email data retention, checked 22 Oct 2026). If your subscriber record is deleted, Kit removes it together with its email history (Kit: deleting vs unsubscribing, checked 23 Oct 2026).
  • Correspondence: up to 1 year after our last exchange, unless it becomes part of a business enquiry or client relationship, in which case we keep it as part of our business records.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask us to:

  • give you a copy of your data (access)
  • correct it (rectification)
  • delete it (erasure)
  • limit how we use it (restriction)
  • stop using it (objection)
  • send it to you or another organisation in a usable format (portability)

You can also withdraw your consent at any time. Email hello@manchestersignal.co.uk. We will reply within one month. There is no charge in most cases.

Complaints

Please contact us first so we can try to put things right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK data protection regulator: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, helpline 0303 123 1113.

Changes

If we change this notice in a way that matters, we will tell subscribers in the newsletter.
